WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

GLENDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Since its inception in 2014, Barraz Genesis has collaborated with Glendale Community College (GCC) and Headstart’s Child Lab to host annual literacy parades, such as the one featuring "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom." Departments competed in table decorating to support the parade's purpose of fostering a love for reading by engaging children in themed crafts and decorations. Subsequent events, including parades inspired by "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" and celebrated children’s author Eric Carle, continued to deepen children's appreciation for literature through creative activities, thanks to the partnership between Barraz Genesis, GCC, and Headstart’s Child Lab.

In addition to its collaborative efforts with Glendale Community College and Headstart’s Child Lab, Barraz Genesis initiated the "Passport to Literacy Program" in its early years. Founded by Elena Garcia, the program aimed to incentivize regular reading among preschool and kindergarten students while actively involving parents in their children's literacy journey. Participants received a passport activity to track reading progress, along with a set of pajamas and a brand-new book each week, fostering a love for reading from an early age and strengthening the bond between children and their caregivers.

A SECOND CHAPTER

FOWLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT

Barraz Genesis established a meaningful partnership with Fowler Elementary School District, implementing engaging reading sessions to promote literacy and family involvement. In our inaugural session, we collaborated with Poggi Designs to develop a curriculum based on "David Goes to School" by David Shannon, emphasizing the values of good behavior and empathy. Subsequent sessions, including one featuring "Duck and Goose" by Tad Hills, focused on demonstrating reading modeling for parents and exploring themes of friendship and cooperation. In our third session, centered around "I'll Wait, Mr. Panda" by Steve Antony, families participated in activities reinforcing patience and bonding through literature, creating a holistic approach to childhood literacy.
